Hello everybody, Mickey Griffith with Asentiv in Sacramento and I’d like to talk about Mark Twain today, Mark Twain was quoted as saying something along the lines of, “Make your vacation your vocation and you’ll always be happy.” And then the other one I’ve heard is, “If you find what you love to do, you’ll never work another day in your life.” Let’s talk about this for a second. Make your vacation your vocation. When I first heard of it, I thought, “Well, that’s nice and everything.” And then I thought, “Well, have you ever been on a vacation that sucked?” I have, things go wrong, flights go wrong, hotel sucks, the food is bad, whatever.
We’ve all had some vacation experience that wasn’t great. So I don’t know if I really care for the analogy that much but again, at least with the heart of what Mark was talking about, or Mr. Twain. It was talking about … and the other quote about, “Do something that you love and you’ll never work again another day in your life.” I don’t know if I buy that. Here’s the thing, I love what I do and I’ve got to tell you, sometimes I’m working hard. Ivan Misner said it, “The secret to success without hard work is still a secret.”
If you’re under the impression that you’re going to just go out and do something that you love to do and the money will just come flowing in, you’re probably mistaken or at least a little naive, and you could be setting yourself up for some huge disappointment. Because here’s the thing. Even if you’re doing what you love doing, there’s portions of our business that we don’t like to do that are absolutely necessary. Things like bookkeeping and tracking numbers and having systems. And for some people, that’s what they love to do but then they don’t want to do other things like marketing and blogging and social media or whatever, other things that feed the business itself.
So, if we believe that we’re just going to have a vacation all the time and not have to work, we might be fooling ourselves a little bit. Don’t be afraid to knuckle under. Put your nose to the grindstone. Get a little work done now and then. Yes, it helps a ton to really love what you’re doing. It also helps to remind yourself on those really busy days that you DO love what you’re doing. I’m Mickey Griffith with Asentiv.
